--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok, heres my problem.
I am currently working on my first map. Part of this map requires a team to head into a structure located under the terrain. My problem is that, I don't know how to situate (build, locate... etc.) the structure under the terrain... I've tried variouse different ways, creating a brush, moving it under ground, then using CSG Subtract, for which I've found can give some seriously adverse affects... but if I don't do that, then once I hollow out the brush, the "caulk" brushes appear inside the structure.. which does me no good either. I've tried deleting the "caulk" brushes around where I want to build under the terrain but, anytime I try to select a brush, I wind up selecting the entire terrain entity, which is just a corinary waiting to happen... I've been looking all over the net for an easy solution to this problem - and there has just got to be one - but, everyone just talks about "doing it" and nothing about "how to".. I've taken a look at mp_beach and they've managed to create HUGE holes under the terrain to accomplish basically the same thing I want to do...this is getting seriously frustraiting... can someone help me out on this one?
Thanks

Dont ever use csg subtract on terrain. Best not to use it at all as it can split a brush into many small fragments. Use alt + shift to select individual terrain triangles and drag the bottom up or deleat it. Dont mess with the textured face.
I saw an exellent tut on this but I dont remember where?

yeah, the last time I used CSG subtract, I got weird non-clipping textured planes spiking out of the ground....
anyway, thanks alot for the info! I had been trying ctrl+shift and then using one of my 3 mouse buttons... never even thought about alt+shift...
thanks again!

heres another question...
Is it ok to "embed" something in the terrain? e.g. taking a thick wall and pushing into the side of a hill so that only the front and half the top of the wall is showing without doing anything to the terrain?

thats the one, krekits : )
If you look at the beach you will see they did embed some brushes in the terrain but I would keep it to a minimum.

I did the same thing in my map, I don't know if you know this already, but if you are using Easygen, there is an option when you export it called "Thin mesh", this makes the caulk underneath much thinner, so it won't get in the way as much under the terrain.

Yeah, I did notice that thin mesh option in easygen... I think I tried it once, but when I loaded the map into rtcw, my frame rates were cut in half... but I think that was do to having way to much of the map in view... so i had to redo the terrain map, but I didn't use thin mesh that time.. maybe I will try it again..
thanks for the link to that tutorial and all the info!

Thin mesh may or may not be the way to go. makes it hard to insert buildings and cover eveything instead of just texturing one side of the terrain to match the surroundings. you should not have any brushes hidden in the terrain as the manual says not to. You can have brushes inside of caulk brushes though.... q3map2.......
