Sometimes I get some of the GTK windows come up a bit weird, but I just move them around the screen a bit and they come back to glorious life.
Does the console tell you anything useful?

I got the MaximumPC magazine CD and it had the latest drivers for my ATI Radeon, even had a version that work with Dell's front end, all the quirkiness I had thought normal is now gone!

sounds like a driver problem or maybe radiant isnt compatible with your card, on the off chance the gamma might of went crazy, see what the setting is for it, go to misc then gamma.
If it was working before, maybe your pc had a slight error, try restarting the comp, then if it still has gone wrong, maybe you hidden everything by mistake, press shift and h to unhide, also check your filters to see (view > filter) if everything is filtered, like structural (every brush you make is structural unless you make it detail) if structural is selected in a filter then you wont see brushes that are structural. Also at the bottom of view there is open gl lighting cehckbox, try unchecking and checking that. And maybe there is no map, check the other windows, see if the map really is there, and maybe the camera is just so far off you cant see the level so try playing with that and try cubic clipping, try undoing that.
If all this fails reinstall
